Delta Airlines is the major carrier at DTW, located at McNamara terminal concourses A, B, and C between the approach end of runway 3L and 4R. All other airlines operate out of the north terminal.
Detroit runway utilization typically is to land the two outboard runways 21L/3R, 22R/4L and depart the two end board runways 21R/3L and 22L/4R. South flow is our Noise Abatement Configuration.
During the spring and fall seasons we operate on a west flow configuration 27L/27R less than 5% of our overall operations. This is our least favorable configuration, because it reduces our operating efficiency in half.
If weather conditions allow we land on both west runways and depart runway 22R, our best configuration under these conditions.
DTW is unique because we operate with five arrival fixes: POLAR northwest, SPICA northeast, MIZAR southwest, GEMNI and WEEDA to the southeast.
WEEDA may be closed during north flow operations and when arrival rate drops below the standard 72.
CATIII approaches are available for 4L, 4R, and 3R.
CATII approaches are available for 27L, 21L and 22L.
Delta Airlines controls taxi and movement in the Delta ramp area prior to handoff point's circle 4N, 3N, 2N and 2S to the FAA ground controller.
Other carriers are required to contact North Terminal Ramp Tower for push-back; except gates D2, D4, D30, and D32 should contact FAA ground control directly.
Departure runway assignments are done dynamically for departure fix balancing, heavy aircraft are generally assigned runway 22L.
Group Five aircraft are restricted to operate via Taxiway Y and Taxiway K between K10 and K13 due to wing span length.
Runway 21R departures be alert for optical illusion, aircraft taxiing on taxiway T may appear as though crossing runway 21R centerline.
Runway 22L departures be alert of optical illusion, aircraft taxiing on taxiway Q may appear as though crossing runway 22L centerline.
The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport Snow and Ice Plan include a Contingency for Significant Snow Events. The purpose is to provide a plan for deploying County Snow and Ice Removal Teams to effectively treat and keep open critical airfield areas during a significant snow fall event at DTW. The contingency plan will go into effect when a forecasted snow fall is expected to reach or exceed six (6) inches, and if the snow fall accumulates at a rate of one (1) inch or more per hour.
Runway 21R/3L will be closed during the Contingency. WCAA will focus removal efforts on Runway 22R/4L, 22L/4R and 21L/3R.
