RSW Traffic Management Tips

Configurations:

Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) operates with a single runway, limiting configurations to Runway 06 or Runway 24. Runway 06 is preferred and used approximately 85% of the time, while Runway 24 is typically favored during calm wind conditions in overnight operations.

Airport Challenges:

RSW single-runway layout limits overall volume, though maximum capacity is rarely attained. The airport has no run-up/holding pads, high speed turn offs, or runway end feeder taxiways. Ramp space is also limited, restricting the ability to accommodate aircraft experiencing departure delays or unscheduled diversions. Due to limited movement areas, RSW airport is susceptible to gridlock when arrival demand continually exceeds departure throughput.

Seasonal Traffic:

Like other South Florida airports, RSW experiences a substantial seasonal surge, with traffic levels increasing by roughly 100% in the winter compared to summer months. Peak activity typically occurs from January through April. The associated TRACON operations face similar challenges, often representing the primary constraint during the busy season. In particular, the South Radar position, which services Naples Airport (APF) and Marco Island Executive Airport (MKY), becomes especially saturated during peak periods, especially over holiday weekends.
