FLL Traffic Management Tips

Configurations:

East Operation: Runways 10L and 10R

West Operation: Runways 28R and 28L

Airport Challenges:

Runways 10L/28R and 10R/28L are dual purpose runways; minimal runway occupancy times and a consistent, disciplined final are vital to ensure adequate spacing for departures.

Taxiways may be closed or restricted for ramp overflow parking

Crossing the active runways is often necessary to stage aircraft for Traffic Management Initiatives and to reposition aircraft from the North ramp to the South runway and terminals.

Staging departures on a West Operation is difficult due to single taxiway runway access, the lack of run-up pads, and taxi space near the terminal.

The lack of high-speed turn-offs on a West Operation on 28R reduces capacity due to increased runway occupancy time.

Seasonal Traffic:

Traffic volume for FLL changes dramatically between the summer and winter seasons. Traffic increases around Thanksgiving, peaks in February/March, and gradually decreases after Easter into May. During the winter season, traffic demand increases Thursday through Sunday. General Aviation traffic significantly increases around major holidays and local events.

During the summer season, thunderstorms frequently form in the South Florida area affecting daily operations. These thunderstorms are typically accompanied by wind shear and microburst activity leading to airborne holding and ground stops. When thunderstorms impact the enroute environment, the availability of over-water capability greatly increases reroute options.
